White South Sea Pearls

INDONESIA

Working directly with local pearl farming communities, Oceana primarily sources its White South Sea pearls from two islands of the islands here, Tual and Dobo.

Seeking out naturally White South Sea pearls, Oceana ventured to the Maluku Islands of Indonesia where the warm turquoise seas are considered to be the ideal environment for cultivating pearls from the Pinctada Maxima oyster.

Slowly growing for two years before a single pearl can be harvested, the Pinctada Maxima requires constant care so that it can thrive in its natural habitat and produce the lustrous white pearls that it is prized for.

It is in the crystal clear waters of eastern Indonesia that White or Silver Lipped oysters are cultivated in order to produce naturally silver to white pearls.

This variant of the South Sea Oyster produces White South sea in a range of shapes with Round being the most coveted for its spherical perfection.
Requiring regular care and protection from predators, oysters are kept in panels just below the surface of the sea, thriving on the nutrient rich water that is so plentiful in these waters.
Though each pearl farm differs, pearl farms are generally small scale ranches, providing local employment for 20-100 people and incurring the most minor environmental footprint.

Of almost any marine environment in the world, Indonesia harbours a wealth of marine biodiversity thanks to its thousands of miles of warm, shallow coasts.
